If, throughout the course of a life there are periods of profound interruption, things will proliferate when there is a span without them, or when circumstances shift to minimize the disruption so caused. I think perhaps the most common examples may be home fires, incarcerations, or homelessness, all of which tend to reset the tide mark on possessions. When every year or so, nearly all possessions are lost, accumulation will become a habit. Real ownership of a permanent residence, or the existence of a strong support network may contribute to a minimal reset where much is retained from periods preceding.
All of which is to say I have more than one of everything now and I am not conditioned to ignore the novelty of it yet.
